Montserrat

Reviewed: 29 February 2008, 14:33 NZDT
Still current at: 04 November 2009

There is some risk to your safety in Montserrat due to increasing volcanic activity and we advise caution.

The Soufriere Hills Volcano alert level was increased to level 4 (on a scale of 5) on 24 December 2006 as a result of volcanic activity and a further volcanic event occurred on 5 January 2007. Major volcanic activity could well be imminent.

About two-thirds of the island has been designated an Unsafe Area and entry to this area is strictly controlled.

The Government of Montserrat has implemented an island-wide siren system to warn of volcanic activity. If New Zealanders in Montserrat hear that siren they should immediately tune into Radio Montserrat ZJB 88.3 FM or 95.5 FM to obtain the latest official information and should also follow the advice of the local authorities.

New Zealanders travelling or resident in Montserrat should have comprehensive medical and travel insurance policies in place that include provision for medical evacuation by air.

New Zealanders visiting or living in Montserrat are encouraged to register their details with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
