The Netherlands shares with the rest of Europe a threat from terrorism. Terrorist attacks have taken place in many major European cities and New Zealanders in the Netherlands are advised to be security conscious at all times.
The Dutch government has been on heightened alert since the November 2004 murder of a Dutch filmmaker by an individual associated with the terrorist organisation known as the Hofstad Group.
On 6 March 2008 the Dutch government raised their terrorism threat level from ‘limited’ to ‘substantial’. The main reason for the increase is the growing threat to Western Europe as a whole from Al Qaeda connected terrorist groups. Another factor is the planned release of a controversial film on the Koran by a Dutch parliamentarian. (For further details see the National Coordinator for Counter Terrorism website [external link])
New Zealanders are advised to avoid all demonstrations, protests and rallies and keep themselves informed of potential risks to safety and security by monitoring the media and other local information sources.
New Zealanders travelling or resident in the Netherlands should have comprehensive medical and travel insurance policies in place.
New Zealanders travelling or resident in the Netherlands are encouraged to register their details with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
