The terrorist group Al Qaida has made a specific threat to conduct terrorist attacks across Europe and Sweden shares this threat with the rest of the region. Al Qaida and individuals and groups inspired by their ideology have previously conducted attacks in major cities across Europe and continue to plan attacks.

On 4 October 2010, the Swedish Security Service raised the terrorist threat level for Sweden from low to elevated (level three on a five level scale) in response to a specific terrorism threat. The threat level remains in place.

On 11 December 2010, two explosive devices were detonated in central Stockholm, injuring two bystanders and killing the suspected suicide bomber.

New Zealanders in Sweden are advised to be security conscious at all times, particularly in public places, and stay informed of potential risks to safety and security by monitoring the media and other local information sources.

New Zealanders travelling or living in Sweden should have comprehensive medical and travel insurance policies in place.

New Zealanders travelling or living in Sweden are encouraged to register their details with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
