In November 2006, politically motivated rioting took place in central Nuku’alofa. Although the situation in Nuku’alofa has been calm since then, emergency powers remain in place on the island of Tongatapu. The regulations allow the police and military to restrict public activities within a specified zone in the heart of Nuku’alofa.
New Zealanders are advised to avoid any protests and demonstrations as violent clashes cannot be ruled out.
New Zealanders travelling or resident in Tonga should have comprehensive medical and travel insurance policies in place that include provision for medical evacuation by air.
New Zealanders travelling or resident in Tonga are encouraged to register their details with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
