Exercise increased caution

Overview

There are more significant safety or security concerns than you would usually find in New Zealand because of violent crime and civil unrest. Protests may occur at short notice and turn violent without warning.

Other things that New Zealanders travelling or living in Bolivia should be aware of are:

  • Crime—watch out for petty crime, such as theft, especially in urban centres, tourist areas, and on public transport.
  • Local laws—make sure that you get to know the local laws and customs, especially around drugs and medicines.
  • Health – there are risks of mosquito-borne illnesses and altitude sickness.
