Exercise increased caution with higher advice levels in some areas

Overview

There are more significant safety or security concerns than you would usually find in New Zealand, with some areas where you should avoid non-essential travel or avoid all travel.

There is violent crime and the threat of terrorism in Colombia, with drug-related criminal activity and other concerns in some parts of the country. Travel on main routes and during daylight hours.

Other things that New Zealanders travelling or living in Colombia should be aware of are:

  • Illegal armed groups.
  • Kidnapping.
  • Petty crime—watch out for theft, especially in big cities.
  • Civil unrest—protests, demonstrations and strikes are common and can cause disruptions, especially in big cities.
