Exercise normal safety and security precautions

Overview

Safety and security conditions are similar to Aotearoa New Zealand. Exercise the same level of caution for crime, such as theft, as you would in New Zealand.

Other things that New Zealanders travelling or living in the Cook Islands should be aware of are:

  • Tropical cyclone season, which runs from November to April. If a cyclone or tsunami happens, follow the advice of local authorities.
  • Activities like boating and scuba diving—check that your insurance policy covers any activities you’re doing, and make sure there is adequate safety gear, such as life jackets.
  • Scooters and motorbikes—learn the local laws, make sure your insurance policy covers the vehicle you’re renting, and always wear a helmet.
  • Swimming—watch for strong tides and breaks.
