Exercise increased caution

Overview

There are more significant safety or security concerns than you would usually find in New Zealand. Petty crime and theft happens.

Other things that New Zealanders travelling or living in Cuba should be aware of are:

  • Crime – avoid wearing valuable items and be especially careful with luggage at airports.
  • Shortages – there are severe shortages of goods across the country. Power outages are common and mobile phone connection can be unreliable. Make sure you are prepared.
  • Natural disasters – hurricane season runs from June to November. Landslides, flooding and earthquakes can also happen.
  • Civil unrest – demonstrations can happen. Authorities may block internet access without notice. Avoid all protests and gatherings.
