Overview

There are more significant safety or security concerns than you would usually find in New Zealand, with some areas where you should avoid non-essential travel or avoid all travel.  

The ongoing conflict in Lebanon and the Occupied Palestinian Territories could lead to increased tensions in other locations in the Middle East. 

Other things that New Zealanders travelling or living in Egypt should be aware of are:  

• Terrorism—most terrorist attacks have happened in North Sinai, but there is a risk across Egypt. 
• Civil unrest—it is illegal for foreigners to participate in protests and demonstrations.
• Kidnapping—the threat of kidnapping is highest in North Sinai and the western desert, but there is a risk across Egypt.
• Crime—watch out for petty crime, such as theft. There have also been reports of violent crime. 
• Road safety—road accidents are common, often causing death or serious injury.

New Zealanders travelling or living in Egypt should have a comprehensive travel insurance policy in place that includes provision for medical evacuation by air.  Medical facilities and services in Egypt are not of the same standard as in New Zealand.
