Exercise increased caution

Overview

There are more significant safety or security concerns than you would usually find in New Zealand due to crime. Violent crime, including armed robbery, home invasions and kidnapping for ransom can happen. There has been an increase in attacks on passengers in vehicles. Petty crime such as bag snatching and passport theft happens. Pay close attention to your personal security at all times.

Other things that New Zealanders travelling or living in Ghana should be aware of are:

  • Terrorism – terrorist attacks are possible in Ghana, with a heightened risk in northern areas.
  • Civil unrest – demonstrations happen in Ghana and may disrupt transport and public services. Pay close attention to personal security and monitor the media for information about possible safety or security risks.
  • Health – yellow fever and malaria are common in Ghana.
