Exercise increased caution

Overview

There are more significant safety or security concerns than you would usually find in New Zealand. There are high levels of crime, including armed robbery, murder, carjacking, shootings, kidnapping and sexual assault. Petty crime such as bag snatching and pickpocketing also occurs in Guyana and is common in tourist areas, in larger cities and on public transport. Be aware of your personal security at all times.

Other things that New Zealanders travelling or living in Guyana should be aware of are:

  • Civil unrest - demonstrations can happen and can lead to travel disruptions.
  • Transport safety - avoid using minibuses or hailing taxis off the street.
  • Piracy - there is a threat of piracy off coastal waters.
