Exercise increased caution with higher advice levels in some areas

Overview

There are more significant safety or security concerns than you would usually find in New Zealand, and some areas of Honduras where we advise not to travel. There is a very high violent crime rate including homicide, robbery, carjacking, sexual assault and kidnapping. The risk of crime increases after dark.

Other things that New Zealanders travelling or living in Honduras should be aware of are:

  • Civil unrest – political gatherings, protests and demonstrations occur regularly, and some have turned violent in the past. These may affect traffic and transportation. Avoid all protests and demonstrations.
  • Unexploded munitions – be aware of unmarked minefields and don’t stray off well-used roads and paths.
  • Natural disasters – hurricane season usually runs from June to November. Landslides, flooding and disruptions to essential services can happen.
