Exercise increased caution

Overview

There are more significant safety or security concerns than you would usually find in New Zealand. National security laws in Hong Kong are strict, and you could be arrested arbitrarily, or break the law without intending to.

Other things that New Zealanders travelling or living in Hong Kong should be aware of are:

  • Civil unrest—large-scale protests and demonstrations have led to violence between police and protestors.
  • Typhoon season usually goes from May to November. If a typhoon happens, follow the advice of local authorities and let whānau in New Zealand know you’re safe.
  • Crime—watch out for petty crime, such as theft and drink spiking.
