Exercise increased caution

Overview

There are more significant safety or security concerns than you would usually find in New Zealand due to crime. Violent crime can happen. Robbery, pickpocketing and assaults can occur in shopping areas, markets, public transport, and restaurants. Avoid walking alone and be especially cautious after dark in urban centres, when the risk of crime increases.

Other things that New Zealanders travelling or living in Kazakhstan should be aware of are:

  • Civil unrest - demonstrations, protests and strikes can occur in Kazakhstan and may disrupt local public services and transport. Follow the instructions of local authorities.
  • Terrorism - there is an underlying threat of terrorism. Monitor the media for information about threats to safety and security.
  • Seismic activity - Earthquakes, landslides and avalanches can happen. Familiarise yourself with general safety procedures in the event of an earthquake.
