Exercise increased caution with higher advice levels in some areas

Overview

There are more significant safety or security concerns than you would usually find in New Zealand because of the threat of terrorism. There are unexploded landmines and territorial disputes in some areas.

Terrorist groups make threats, and could attack places visited by foreigners.

Other things that New Zealanders travelling or living in Morocco should be aware of are:

  • Civil unrest—protests and demonstrations can turn violent. Avoid all protests and demonstrations.
  • Kidnapping—there is an ongoing threat of kidnapping in remote regions and border areas. Do not hike alone and be cautious.
  • Crime—watch out for both violent and petty theft. Don’t travel after dark or to isolated areas. Don’t wear or display valuables.
  • Scams—watch out for credit card, commercial, and internet fraud. Check goods carefully when making purchases.
