Overview

Terrorism and kidnapping, the presence of armed militants and an unpredictable security situation are all significant threats in Niger. Terrorist groups are active across Niger and attacks could happen anytime, and in places visited by foreigners.

There is also a high threat of kidnapping. Foreigners have been kidnapped from their vehicles, homes, and places of work.

New Zealand has no diplomatic presence in Niger, so the Government’s ability to provide consular assistance to New Zealanders is limited.

Other things that New Zealanders travelling or living in Niger should be aware of are:

  • Violent crime—muggings, home invasions, carjackings, assault and theft are all common and foreigners are often targeted.
  • Armed bandits in some parts of Niger
  • Petty crime—watch out for theft. Guard your belongings and don’t wear or display valuables.
  • Road travel—avoid public transport and travel in a convoy if possible.
  • Landmines—there are unexploded landmines in some parts of Niger. Stay on well-used roads and paths.
  • Scams—watch out for offers that seem too good to be true.
