Overview

There is a serious risk of arrest and detention for New Zealanders in North Korea. Independent tourism is not allowed in North Korea. Foreigners are closely monitored and expected to be accompanied by a guide at all times.

New Zealand has no diplomatic presence in North Korea, so the New Zealand Government’s ability to help New Zealand citizens there is limited. Access to consular support for foreign nationals detained in North Korea is at the discretion of their government and may not be granted.

Other things that New Zealanders travelling or living in North Korea should be aware of are:

  • Political tensions - North Korea has done nuclear and ballistic missile tests, which have made relations with other countries tense.
  • Identification – you should always carry some form of identification. We recommend photocopying valuable documents, and having two copies of your passport, tickets and visa.
  • Photography – photos or videos taken outside of tourist areas could results in devices being confiscated, or in detention.
