Exercise increased caution

Overview

There are more significant safety or security concerns than you would usually find in New Zealand because of violent crime. There is a very high level of violent crime in South Africa, particularly in city centres and townships, and at night.

Other things that New Zealanders travelling or living in South Africa should be aware of are:

  • Transport—carjacking and theft from vehicles is a concern. Check that your route is safe before following GPS instructions. Avoid using public transport.
  • Terrorism—there is a threat of terrorism. Monitor the media and local information sources.
  • Civil unrest—demonstrations and protests can disrupt traffic and public transportation. These can become violent at short notice. Avoid all demonstrations, protests and rallies, and do not cross roadblocks.
  • Outages—scheduled power outages occur regularly. Make sure you are prepared to have limited power.
