Exercise normal safety and security precautions

Overview

A declaration of martial law was temporarily introduced on the 3rd of December. This has since been lifted on the 4th of December. New Zealanders in South Korea should avoid all demonstrations.

Some things that New Zealanders travelling or living in South Korea should be aware of are:

  • Political tensions - relations between South and North Korea can be tense. North Korea has done nuclear and ballistic missile tests. Future tests could affect South Korea.
  • Civil unrest - demonstrations and protests are common and can disrupt travel plans.
  • Natural disasters and severe weather - monsoons and typhoons happen. If you’re travelling during the rainy or typhoon seasons, have a plan for what to do if there is a severe weather event.
