Exercise increased caution with higher advice levels in some areas

Advice level

  • Last updated: 01 December 2024

Still current at: 19 February 2025

Exercise increased caution in Tanzania due to violent crime and the threat of terrorism (level 2 of 4).

Note: there are areas of Tanzania where we recommend you avoid non-essential travel. See regional advice below.

Find out more about our travel advice.

Overview

There are more significant safety or security concerns in Tanzania than you would usually find in New Zealand. Violent crime, including mugging and armed robbery, is common.

There is an increasing threat of terrorism, and attacks could target Western interests and groups.

Other things New Zealanders travelling or living in Tanzania should be aware of are:

  • Crime – watch out for petty crime and drink-spiking.
  • Civil unrest – protests and demonstrations can cause delays to traffic and public transportation.
  • Local travel – road travel can be hazardous. Use only well-maintained public transport and taxis. Do not board ferries that are overloaded.
