Exercise normal safety and security precautions

Overview

Safety and security conditions are similar to New Zealand. Exercise the same level of caution for crime, such as theft and assault, as you would in New Zealand, especially after dark.

Other things that New Zealanders travelling or living in Tonga should be aware of are:

  • Transport safety—domestic aviation safety practices in Tonga may not meet international standards. Maritime safety regulations are not always followed and ferries are often overcrowded.
  • Natural disasters and severe weather—Tonga is in an active seismic zone and earthquakes, volcanic activity and tsunamis can occur. The Pacific cyclone season usually runs from November to April.
