Exercise increased caution with higher advice levels in some areas

Overview

There are more significant safety or security concerns in Uganda than you would usually find in New Zealand.

Terrorism is an ongoing threat, especially around public holidays or religious events.

Violent crime, including armed robbery, banditry, kidnapping and carjacking happens, especially outside Kampala.

Demonstrations can lead to violence. Police have responded to protesters with tear gas, rubber bullets and live ammunition.

Other things New Zealanders travelling or living in Uganda should be aware of are:

  • Crime – watch out for drink-spiking and scams.
  • Maritime safety – ferries are often overcrowded and may not have the same safety standards you would see in New Zealand.
