Updated 17 February 2025
Earthquakes have been occurring around the islands of Santorini, Ios, Amorgos and Anafi in the Aegean Sea, including a reported magnitude 5.2 earthquake.
Due to the seismic activity, Greek authorities declared a State of Emergency for Santorini from 6 February 2025 until 3 March 2025.
The Greek Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection has issued advice for Amorgos, Santorini (Thira), Anafi, and Ios, including not to attend large indoor gatherings, to avoid old or abandoned buildings, and to avoid the ports of Amoudi, Armeni, Korfos, and Old Port (Paleos Limenas) and Fira. There is a serious risk of landslides and rockfalls due to the ongoing tremors.
New Zealanders living in or traveling near any of the affected areas are advised to follow any instructions issued by the local authorities (including evacuation orders), and to closely monitor international media and other sources of information, including social media, to stay informed of the latest developments and advice. In case of a strong earthquake, people should immediately depart coastal areas due to the risk of a tsunami.
We recommended New Zealanders stay in contact with family and friends to keep them informed of their plans and well-being and register on SafeTravel.
