Protests and Demonstrations across Türkiye

Article image description

Following the arrest of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoğlu, on 22 March, 2025, there have been large protests across Türkiye. While some of the largest protests have taken place in Istanbul, gatherings have occurred in many cities across Türkiye, including Ankara and Izmir.

These demonstrations have taken place in busy public and pedestrian areas and are expected to continue in the coming days. Violent incidents have occurred and further violence cannot be ruled out. Protests may continue to significantly disrupt traffic and public transport. Large public squares are likely venues for the demonstrations.

A protest ban is in effect and there are restrictions to freedom of movement for those suspected of participating in protests. This may be strictly enforced.  Authorities may use forceful means to suppress the demonstrations.

We recommend all New Zealanders in Türkiye avoid all protests and large public gatherings. Monitor the local media and follow the advice of local authorities at all times.
