Exercise increased caution

Overview

Violent crime is a significant risk for New Zealanders in Sierra Leone. Common crimes include armed robbery, assault and mugging. The risk is higher after dark.

While the political situation is currently stable, there are tensions. Protests and demonstrations have resulted in violence.

New Zealand has no diplomatic presence in Sierra Leone, so the New Zealand Government’s ability to help New Zealand citizens there is limited.

Some other things that New Zealanders living or travelling in Sierra Leone should be aware of are:

  • Local travel – there are limited transport options outside of Freetown. Airport transport may not be safe.
  • Local laws and customs – learn the laws and follow them. Respect religious and social traditions.
  • Medical services – Medical facilities are severely limited and ambulance services are unreliable or unavailable.
