Exercise increased caution with higher advice levels in some areas

Overview

There are more significant safety or security concerns than you would usually find in New Zealand because of the potential for violent demonstrations and the threat of terrorism.

Terrorist attacks could target places visited by foreigners. Take care in tourist areas and be aware of your surroundings.

Other things that New Zealanders travelling or living in Oman should be aware of are:

  • Maritime travel—regional tensions make travelling in the Gulf area highly sensitive. There is also piracy in coastal waters.
  • Crime—watch out for petty theft, like pickpocketing or theft from vehicles.
  • Local laws and customs – some behaviours and dress that are normal in New Zealand are not legal in Oman. Learn and follow local laws and customs.
