Overview

There is an ongoing and very high threat of terrorist attack throughout Afghanistan. The threat to New Zealanders in Afghanistan is very high.

Attacks target hotels, housing compounds, restaurants and other places visited by foreigners. There are also threats around airports.

New Zealand has no diplomatic presence in Afghanistan, so the Government’s ability to provide assistance to New Zealanders is limited.

Other things that New Zealanders travelling or living in Afghanistan should be aware of are:

  • Kidnapping.
  • Civil unrest and political tension.
  • Violent crime, such as carjacking, rape, armed robbery, and banditry.
