Avoid non-essential travel with higher advice levels in some areas

Overview

There are sustained or serious safety or security concerns in this destination that create significant risks. You should think seriously about your need to travel. There are threats of terrorism, political violence and violent crime in Burundi.

We offer advice for New Zealanders travelling to places where there is violence or conflict. See our threat of violence or conflict page.

Other things that New Zealanders travelling or living in Burundi should be aware of are:

  • Civil unrest - there is ongoing sporadic violence and unrest in response to political developments. Avoid unnecessary travel and be aware of your personal security.
  • Crime - risks increase after dark. Armed robbery, grenade attacks, mugging and carjacking is common.

New Zealanders travelling or living in Burundi should have a comprehensive travel insurance policy in place that includes provision for medical evacuation by air.

See below for detailed travel advice.

Consular assistance for New Zealanders

New Zealand has no diplomatic presence in Burundi, so the New Zealand Government's ability to help New Zealand citizens there is limited.
