Exercise increased caution

Overview

There are more significant safety or security concerns than you would usually find in New Zealand. Germany has a higher threat of terrorism. You can also expect to see increased security presence across the country.

Other things that New Zealanders travelling or living in Germany should be aware of are:

  • Civil unrest - demonstrations and protests are common, and can disrupt travel plans.
  • Crime - watch out for petty crime, such as theft and drink-spiking, especially in urban centres, tourist areas, and on public transport.
  • Natural disasters - follow the advice of local authorities if a natural disaster happens.

Germany has  announced  the temporary reintroduction of border controls at all land borders for a six-month period, starting 16 September 2024. While these new controls do not change New Zealanders' eligibility to enter Germany, they do mean that border checks may occur even when travelling from a Schengen country

Find out more about border controls on the German ministry of the interior website

New Zealanders travelling or living in Germany should have a comprehensive travel insurance policy in place.
