Overview

The political and security situation in Libya is fragile, and there is an increased military presence. There have been armed clashes, and there are significant numbers of landmines and unexploded ordinances where fighting has been.

Tripoli International Airport has been closed since July 2014, and other international airports have closed or become inaccessible.

New Zealand has no diplomatic presence in Libya, so the New Zealand Government’s ability to help New Zealand citizens there is limited. Read our advice for New Zealanders in areas where there is violence and conflict.

Other things New Zealanders travelling or living in Libya should be aware of are:

  • Civil unrest – public demonstrations are common, and can turn violent without warning.
  • Terrorism – there is an extreme threat of terrorism, and attacks could target foreigners.
  • Kidnapping – foreigners could be targets for kidnapping by criminal and terrorist groups. Hostages have been killed by their captors.
  • Violent crime – watch out for carjackings and robbery by armed groups.
