Exercise increased caution

Overview

There are more significant safety or security concerns than you would usually find in New Zealand. Violent crime, including muggings and robberies, is common in Madagascar. New Zealanders are advised to exercise a high degree of vigilance. Keep a low profile and avoid remote locations, especially if travelling alone.

Other things that New Zealanders travelling or living in Madagascar should be aware of are:

  • Travel - there is a significant risk when travelling by road in Madagascar. There have been armed robberies and carjackings on main roads and highways, especially at night. Armed criminals have robbed passengers on tourist boats.
  • Health - plague is a known risk in Madagascar with cases reported every year in the rainy season between September and April.
  • Natural disasters - Tropical Cyclone season runs from November to April, but cyclones may also occur outside of this period. Follow the advice of local authorities.
