Overview

Ongoing civil unrest and armed conflict in the region are a significant threat to New Zealanders in Myanmar.

The Myanmar military has declared a state of emergency and taken control of the country. There is violence, night-time curfews, and bans on public gatherings across the country. You can also expect an increased security presence.

Other things that New Zealanders travelling or living in Myanmar should be aware of are:

  • Widespread political violence.
  • Widespread detentions, including of foreigners.
  • Violent attacks, some using Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs).
  • Armed conflict between military forces, ethnic armed groups, and militias. These can result in kidnapping, death, or injury.
  • The limited number of legal land crossing points into Myanmar, and the process for getting permission to cross these borders.
