Exercise increased caution with higher advice levels in some areas

Overview

There are more significant safety or security concerns than you would usually find in New Zealand because of crime.

Street crime, like pickpocketing and bag snatching, are common. There is also violent crime, including armed robberies and muggings.

Other things that New Zealanders travelling or living in Senegal are:

  • Terrorism - be aware of risks to safety and security by monitoring the media and follow the advice of local authorities.
  • Civil unrest - public demonstrations are common, and can turn violent without warning.
  • Scams – many forms of fraud are common in West Africa.

New Zealanders travelling or living in Senegal should have a comprehensive travel insurance policy in place that includes provision for medical evacuation by air.

See detailed travel advice below.

Consular assistance for New Zealanders

As there is no New Zealand diplomatic presence in Senegal, the ability of the government to provide consular assistance to New Zealand citizens is severely limited. Read our advice about what to do if there is violence or conflict.
