Overview

Armed conflict, civil unrest, terrorism and kidnapping are a significant threat to New Zealanders in Sudan. 

Use caution if travelling around Khartoum and do not travel at night. You need a permit from local authorities to travel outside Khartoum. Make sure you have personal security protection.

New Zealand has no diplomatic presence in Sudan, so the New Zealand Government’s ability to help New Zealand citizens there is limited. Read our advice for New Zealanders in areas where there is violence or conflict. 

Other things New Zealanders travelling or living in Sudan should be aware of are: 

• Crime – watch out for violent crime, including armed robbery, home invasion, carjacking, and armed attacks. Do not walk alone or after dark. If you’re travelling by car, lock the doors and close the windows. 
• Landmines, especially in eastern and southern Kordofan states, and border areas with Eritrea.
