Exercise increased caution with higher advice levels in some areas

Overview

There are more significant safety or security concerns in Timor-Leste than you would usually find in New Zealand.

Foreigners may be targets for crimes including robbery and sexual harassment. Stay alert and look after your belongings. Don’t travel alone at night.

Political protests and events can also turn violent without warning.

Other things New Zealanders travelling or living in Timor-Leste should be aware of are:

  • Road travel – driving can be hazardous, especially at night. Do not take public transport.
  • Health – medical services are limited and it’s difficult to get pharmaceuticals. There have been reported cases of dengue fever and rabies.
  • Natural disasters – earthquakes can happen.
