Exercise increased caution with higher advice levels in some areas

Overview

An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.2 struck Türkiye on 23 April. The earthquake epicentre was in the Sea of Marmara in the Silivri area about 80 km west of Istanbul and occurred at around 12:50pm local time. The earthquake was felt across Istanbul and was also felt at Gallipoli in Çanakkale Province. Local authorities have reported that there were no deaths and no major structural damage has been identified.

The earthquake has not impacted plans for the Gallipoli commemorations on 25 April. If you have any questions or concerns about your travel plans please contact your tour company, travel provider or accommodation.

Protests have been occurring across Türkiye since March 19, 2025. Large-scale demonstrations may include roadblocks and disrupt traffic and public transportation. A protest ban is in effect across many Turkish cities, which includes restrictions to freedom of movement for those suspected of participating in protests. This is expected to be strictly enforced.  We recommend New Zealanders in these areas to follow instructions of local authorities.

There are more significant safety or security concerns than you would usually find in New Zealand due to the heightened risk of terrorism. There have been terrorist attacks in Türkiye, including in places visited by foreigners.

Other things that New Zealanders travelling or living in Türkiye should be aware of are:

  • Crime - watch out for petty crime, such as theft, especially in major tourist areas. Sexual assaults have been reported in popular tourist areas. Don’t leave food or drink unattended.
  • Civil unrest - demonstrations and protests can take place at short notice. Avoid all demonstrations and protests as even those intended to be peaceful can become violent. Follow all instructions of the local authorities including curfews.
  • Natural disasters - there is an ongoing possibility of earthquakes in Türkiye.

New Zealanders travelling or living in Türkiye should have a comprehensive travel insurance policy in place that includes provision for medical evacuation by air.

See below for detailed travel advice.

Consular assistance for New Zealanders

While the Turkish Government recognises dual nationality, it is likely that dual Turkish and New Zealand nationals will be deemed to be Turkish citizens in relation to any legal matter. Our ability to provide consular assistance may be limited if you are a Turkish and New Zealand dual national who has been detained in Türkiye.
