Exercise increased caution with higher advice levels in some areas

Overview

There are more significant safety or security concerns than you would usually find in New Zealand due to the heightened risk of terrorism. There have been terrorist attacks in Türkiye, including in places visited by foreigners.

Other things that New Zealanders travelling or living in Türkiye should be aware of are:

  • Crime - watch out for petty crime, such as theft, especially in major tourist areas. Sexual assaults have been reported in popular tourist areas. Don’t leave food or drink unattended.
  • Civil unrest - demonstrations and protests can take place at short notice. Avoid all demonstrations and protests as even those intended to be peaceful can become violent. Follow all instructions of the local authorities including curfews.
  • Natural disasters - there is an ongoing possibility of earthquakes in Türkiye.
