Update: Myanmar and Thailand earthquake

Two large earthquakes struck central Myanmar on 28 March 2025. A significant 7.7 magnitude earthquake with an epicentre 16km northwest of Sagaing, near the city Mandalay and a subsequent 6.4 magnitude aftershock which struck shortly after with and epicentre 18km south of Sagaing.

The 7.7 magnitude earthquake was also felt strongly in Thailand, including in Bangkok.

Thailand

There have been ongoing tremors and aftershocks in parts of Thailand. There’s damage to some buildings and infrastructure in Bangkok and assessments are ongoing. There continue to be local transport disruptions. Avoid affected areas where possible. If you’re in the area or planning to travel there, follow the advice of the local authorities and monitor local media updates.  If possible, keep your family and friends aware of where you are and your current status.

Flights into and out of Bangkok remain operational. Contact your travel provider or airline about travel disruption.

Myanmar

A state of emergency has been declared in Myanmar. There continue to be aftershocks. There is significant damage to buildings, roads and infrastructure in Mandalay and Nay Pyi Taw, as well as surrounding regions. Yangon international airport remains operational, but Mandalay and Nay Pyi Taw airports are closed to commercial aircraft. Avoid any affected areas and monitor media for updates and follow the advice of the local authorities.
